Sound and space

A successful indoor atmosphere has a positive effect on the well-being of the people living in those rooms. Good acoustics plays an important role here and textiles can help to give it a distinct shape.

Schall und Raum -Création Baumann - Inspiration
Stillness breeds strength: we take note of rooms largely by how they sound. Product manager Eliane Ernst talks about the dynamic interaction between acoustics and space and about the role Création Baumann’s sound-effective textiles play in the process.
«Even the most beautiful room only works if it sounds good.»

Eliane Ernst

Since 1996 Eliane Ernst has been designing for and with Création Baumann, becoming product manager and collection director in 2001. While studying “Textile Design” at the academy of design in Lucerne, she was already interested in integral processes—from idea and product to its application in a room. Since then, Eliane Ernst has been dealing intensively with the conflicting priorities of architecture, space and people, with a particular interest and huge know-how for functional textiles in, among others, acoustics.

How do we preceive good acoustics in a room?

We intuitively perceive a good indoor atmosphere. Sound plays a key role here but it is often difficult to articulate why that is the case. Visual strength and acoustic properties are not mutually exclusive—quite the contrary: when we enter a room we always know exactly whether we enjoy being in this room or not. A few simply questions quickly show the decisive aspects: is it too cold? Is it too dark, or, quite the opposite, too bright? Can we hear one another when talking at the table? The reason being, good acoustics plays a strongly positive role for our well-being.

Why did you start developing sound-effective textiles?

In intense discourse with architects and acoustics experts, Création Baumann recognised the potential for textiles with acoustic properties early on. Since then we have been pioneering in interior acoustics. Intense analyses of the acoustic properties of our existing materials helped us gain a deep awareness of their abilities, expressed in unambiguous sound absorption coefficients and test reports. The next step was to develop new solutions to consider the sound-effective dimension right from the start. This has made Création Baumann a worldwide innovation leader in sheer textiles. Today, we are acoustics experts, offering comprehensive scientifically tested acoustic textiles for any room.

How do we achieve pleasant indoor acoustics?

How comfortable you feel in your home also depends on well-functioning acoustics. In private spaces, we have a variety of options to unleash the integral potential of our home with the use of textiles. Specialists such as architects or interior designers explicitly consider the acoustic aspect in their work, intensively deal with it and happily share their expertise. Our specialist retailers support consumers with their expert knowledge to develop an optimum result in rooms using the right textiles—because we not only want to have a beautiful home, we want to enjoy living in it.

The topic of Création Baumann’s sound-reducing textile solutions is an integral aspect of interior design. Surfaces made of concrete, steel or glass, minimalism and contemporary loft architecture: the architectural style of modernity fascinates us with its impressive aesthetics. But acoustics, temperature and light control are also part of a functioning indoor atmosphere. In addition, all these levels can be shaped and controlled with textile modules to specifically align them to an integral feeling of well-being for the people living in those spaces.

Facts about acoustics

Textiles play a major role in sound absorption. Création Baumann offers you the greatest variety worldwide in sound-effective fabrics—for harmonious acoustics and aesthetics. Our fabrics have been tested according to ISO 354/ISO 11654 and DIN EN 29053 / ISO 9053 and feature values of an unheard-of quality in any sound range. Over 90 acoustic fabrics in more than 2000 colours say it clearly: nowhere else will you be able to explore as many diverse sound-absorbing fabrics as with Création Baumann.

  • Sound absorption for controlling the acoustic indoor effect
  • Reducing the reverberation time depending on weight, porousness and weaving technology
  • Tests in reverberation chambers (frequency range between 100 and 5000 Hz) let us compare the acoustic functionality of textiles
  • Test reports according to ISO 354 / ISO 11654 and DIN EN 29053 / ISO 9053
«Today we are offering comprehensive sound-effective textile solutions, underpinned by scientific data sheets.»
